Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge is On!
The 5th Annual Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge was officially launched on October 1st, and will continue until the end of the month!
The Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge has chefs throughout the city create special menus for the month, which have included vegan appetizers, entrees, and desserts.
Until October 31st, you can visit the list of recruited restaurants (more are being recruited daily) and ask for their ‘Vegan Challenge’ menu. The options this year include appetizers, soups, main entrees, desserts, brunch, and the new options of the bar menu! There are also a couple of oil-free and low-fat options that will be made available as well.
Some of the many chefs from participating restaurants include James Herzig of Nectar Cafe, Suleka Sun-Lindley of Thai Basil Restaurant, and F.J. of 58 Degrees & Holding Co. Chef F.J. stated he is particularly excited to join the 2015 challenge because he can focus on creating healthier options that “are a little different from what we’re accustomed to.” He continued, stating:
“The great thing about vegans is that they’re so appreciative. They provided honest feedback (re: the menu) and really enjoyed it!”
A vegan blog that is dedicated to the challenge for October, called Sacramento Vegan, has been trying out the various vegan options available at the list of participating restaurants. So far the blogger has enjoyed soyrizo and rice tamales, a chocolate-whiskey poached pear, pumpkin pancakes, spicy okra and pumpkin stir-fry, pumpkin coconut soup, mango sweet rice, a lemon/grapefruit cocktail, and much more!
While the initiative on its own is fantastic, the results are even more impressive. Many of the participating restaurants have stated the options have been extremely popular by vegans and non-vegans alike, and many plan to incorporate some of those options in their menus permanently!
Chef Clay Purcell, of Tower Bridge Bistro, for example, stated that as more and more diners request vegan options, he is making plans to fulfill those requests all year long.
If you are in the Sacramento area or close-by make sure to check out the list of participating restaurants and enjoy their ‘Vegan Challenge’ menu and vote for your favorite!
