Steve-O Goes To Jail for Orcas in Captivity
Steve-O, popular stuntman and one of the stars of the hit reality series Jackass, has been handed a 30-day prison sentence in Los Angeles County Jail for a stunt he pulled earlier in the year.
In August 2015, as a protest against SeaWorld and to raise awareness about the orcas that they keep in captivity, Steve-O climbed a crane in Hollywood, and then proceeded to shoot off fireworks while holding a balloon shaped like an orca that read “SeaWorld Sucks.” He was arrested on the spot on charges of creating a false emergency and for trespassing. He was officially handed his sentence this past Wednesday.
The 30-day sentence comes with three years of probation, as well as a ban on entering the Hollywood Entertainment District, and the reality TV star has also been banned from owning fireworks.
However, Steve-O expresses no regret–and to the contrary, could not be happier to express his solidarity to the orcas held in captivity by being captive himself. He stated:
“My whole crane-climbing, fireworks debacle really turned out to be pretty meaningful in the end. I mean, if your goal is to make a statement about captivity, you may as well get yourself locked up!”
This is also not the first time Steve-O has gotten into trouble over his animal rights activism, specifically against SeaWorld. In May of 2013, he was cited for another prank after he vandalized a highway sign that led to the SeaWorld in San Diego. He had changed the sign to read “SeaWorld Sucks” and was fined $239 for the action.
“I have a pretty passionate stance against animal cruelty, as everyone knows. It’s magical if I can take a wild and crazy stunt and do some good.”
With the popularity of Blackfish, and the upcoming Finding Nemo sequel having a stark anti-SeaWorld message, as well as the stunts pulled by Steve-O, it seems negative publicity surrounding SeaWorld has become mainstream–and hopefully this will soon result in the closure of the park for good.
