101 Year Old Retired Heart Surgeon "No Different Than I Was 50 Years Ago" – Thanks to Veganism
Dr. Ellsworth Wareham only retired five years ago from his career as a heart surgeon. He says, at age 101, “I’m basically no different than what I was 50 years ago,” which was around the time he first went vegan. This retiree, during an interview with CCTV America describes how he never cared much for animal foods and so “it was easy” to become a vegan.
He and his 86 year old wife live in Loma Linda, California, which is one of the world’s five “blue zones.” This area, accompanied by Okinawa, Japan, Sardinia, Italy, Nicoya, Costa Rica, and Icaria, Greece are curious spots whose residents live considerably longer lives than the general population. Part of what makes Loma Linda so special is that may older retirees arrive to live out their golden years – and they certainly thrive. Many Seventh Day Adventists – who largely follow vegetarian diets – live here, as well as people focused on doing activities as a community. This social connection, as well as high interests in regular exercise and plant-based diets, likely contributes to the concentration of healthy seniors.
To this day, Dr. Wareham and his wife still drive around and make a point to walk up and down the stairs of their home several times a day. How is his health faring, you might ask?
“I don’t have any trouble with my joints, my hands are steady, my balance is good, I don’t have to walk with a cane.”
What an inspiration!
