Seattle's Bamboo Garden Accused of Serving Non-Vegan Food to Customers
The best part about going to vegan restaurants–besides the delicious food of course, is not having to ask “is this vegan?” for every dish, beverage, and condiment on the menu. That is why the recent accusation made towards Seattle’s Bamboo Garden, a vegan restaurant, is particularly troubling for its plant-based customers.
A post was made recently where a Seattle local, Sally Smith (not her real name) began to become suspicious of the restaurant’s vegan offerings. She stated:
“We ordered the skewers and the ‘bacon’ looked exactly like the non-vegan Morning Star Farms brand, so we were skeptical. When we asked at the time, they wouldn’t show us the package, brand, or ingredients, but assured us it was vegan. That’s when we became suspicious.”
The diners decided to go dumpster diving as they were not satisfied with the answers they received (or lack thereof), and found many packages of non-vegan foods. As Smith herself realized, while it added to her suspicions, there was also a chance the food wrappers were from employees and their non-vegan meals.
Smith decided to go forward and send takeout samples to the IEH Laboratories and Consulting Group, which found that four out of the five dishes tested positive for dairy and eggs. After more failed attempts to speak with the owners about the new findings, Smith went public with the story, as “people have a right to know what they’re putting in their bodies”.
Since then, The Stranger has posted an update from Bamboo Garden itself, with them chalking up the wrappers of non-vegan food to staff and neighboring restaurants, and stated:
“According to a Bamboo Garden representative, the restaurant does serve a non-vegan faux chicken, but customers can request the vegan meat instead. Customers ordering vegan dishes will not be served non-vegan meats, they said.”
I have a feeling this answer is not going to make the vegans who felt betrayed by the restaurant want to return.
