CNN Profiles "Vegan Badass" Patrik Baboumian
If you haven’t already heard of Germany’s strongest man Patrik Baboumian, well, you are about to! Recently profiled on CNN, the “gentle giant” from Iran speaks more about his diet, life, and accomplishments.
Writer Susie East likens Baboumian to Popeye and states he is a vegan who breaks all of the commonly held stereotypes of what people assume or perceive vegans to look or act like. The article outlines his progress in weightlifting, breaking records and his title of “Germany’s Strongest Man” in 2011, and Baboumian talks about how his vegan diet improved his overall physical fitness:
“I got heavier, I got stronger, I won the European championship title in powerlifting, I broke three world records so everything was going perfect…my blood pressure went down, and my recovery time was so much faster so I could train more.”
Baboumian also states that he is focused on encouraging people to lessen their overall meat and dairy consumption, and that if he, a former “dairy addict” can do it, anyone can. He promotes trying a plant-based diet for four weeks and states that most people will remain vegan simply due to how it makes them feel. He also dispelled the common misconception that a vegan diet is lacking, stating:
“Most people think if you are vegan you eat just green stuff, you just eat salad and lettuce and veggies the whole day…I’m eating beans, legumes, lentils and peas and rice and potatoes and a lot of things that have calories to give me the energy to do what I do.”
The profile on the “most unthinkable vegan on the planet” comes to an end with East stating that whether your goal is to help the environment, improve your health, or become a record breaking bodybuilder, “veganism could be the diet for you.”
