Wine Folly Features Guide on Pairing Red Wine with Vegetarian/Vegan Food
There are so many different types of vegan wines available these days–including the more recent game-changing blue wine from Spain and wine produced utilizing UV light–that a guide helping vegetarians and vegans pair their meals with the best type is definitely welcome!
Popular wine guide Wine Folly has done just that with their “Pairing Bold Red Wines With Vegetarian (or Vegan) Food” guide that promises to give readers “some inspiring new ideas for pairing bold red wines with vegetarian or vegan foods.” The introduction states:
“If you’re a vegetarian (or the person responsible for feeding one), you might be under the impression that wine pairing with vegetarian food is limited. Au contraire, that’s just not true! Contrary to what the carnivores would have you believe, vegetarian food offers equally delightful pairings and can even stand up against bolder red wines than many meat-based dishes.”
The guide breaks down the fundamental components and different aromas and flavors found in bold red wines and provides instructions on how to pair them with a complimentary meal. An example includes choosing a Napa Cabernet that has “high tannin, high intensity, and flavors of black cherry, cocoa powder, red pepper, and cedar,” and coupling it with a “BBQ burger patty with pinto beans, crushed dried shiitake mushrooms, soy sauce, oil, black pepper, and molasses,” and adding roasted red pepper and melted vegan cheddar cheese to “highlight the red pepper-y spice in the wine.” The result? “Hedonism heaven,” the guide states.
