Restaurant Review: Harlow in Portland, Oregon
Hawthorne Ave. in SE Portland is one of the busiest strips in the city. Crowded with coffee shops, vintage shops, and more, businesses can easily get lost in the clutter. Or, they can be the reason that people come to Hawthorne in the first place. The lines out the door point to Harlow, the Portland hotspot for brunch, soups, smoothies, and everything in between.
The Vanilla Chia Pudding is quite a mesmerizing presentation. The sliced bananas and nut mix are placed on top of the chia pudding, hiding it. But once you scoop into the pudding, you are gifted this gorgeous, red chia mixture that’s sweet, nutty, and with just the right amount of acidity. It’s a morning or brunch staple that we would recommend to anyone.
Like its sister restaurant, Prasad, Harlow also has wonderful bowls that taste as great as they look. The Betty Bowl is a fan favorite with brown rice or quinoa, steamed greens, roasted vegetables, cabbage apple kimchi, sea vegetables, za’atar, and your choice of sauces. We topped ours with the avocado cilantro and the roasted garlic sunflower sauces. Everything about this bowl was nutritious, flavorful, and roasted to perfection. The sauces were smooth and mixed in the bowl effortlessly only adding to the vegetables’ flavors, not there for the sake of hiding a lack of seasoning.
If you’re not full yet, try their Herbed Scallion Biscuit. It’s a house-made gluten-free biscuit with sun-dried tomatoes, an herb blend, and Daiya mozzarella. It’s soft and fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and a perfect addition to any lunch or dinner order.
Harlow has a wonderfully diverse clientele — everyone from college students to new moms like to frequent this restaurant. With the affordable price point, beautiful wood decor and natural lighting, and a killer menu, it’s no surprise that Harlow is one of the best spots in town to grab a healthy meal.
