7 Reasons Why London is a Vegan Paradise
While Britain itself is home to so many vegan restaurants, pubs, and butcher shops, today we place the focus on London. Featured below are just some of the city’s plant-based gems that will make you want to board a plane, making it your next destination!
1- Temple of Seitan
Temple of Seitan, a street food business specializing in all things (vegan) fried chicken, announced that a physical shop would open in 2017:
“In January 2017, we’ll be opening London’s (and maybe the world’s!) 1st 100% vegan chicken shop. We’re looking forward to providing a vegan alternative for Londoners craving a bit of takeaway.”
2- What the Pitta
“We know veganism is set to boom in 2017 so it’s about time London had its own tastier, meat-free alternative. Not only for vegans, this is a healthier option that does good for you, the planet and doesn’t come with the next morning regret.”
What the Pitta has two locations for those craving a vegan döner and other Turkish-inspired vegan specialties: Boxpark Croydon (99 George St.) and Boxpark Shoreditch (2-10 Bethnal Green Rd.).
Italian pizzeria PickyWops announced on April 1 of this year that the restaurant would undergo a 100% vegan transformation after owners Cristiano Vitelli and Andrea Moro adopted a plant-based diet. The post on Facebook read:
“Our cosy little pizza place will be also free from dairy, from meat and most importantly 100% CRUELTY FREE from tomorrow Sunday the 2nd of April!!! We believe that nothing can justify violence and we have to give our contribution to prove that there is an alternative way based on compassion, sustainable and in our case TASTIER!!! We also believe that our concept is based on look at things from a different angle and don’t stop judging from labels…its not true that something is right only because we have been always doing it!!”
Located at 347 North End Road (Shopping Palace Unit 7), the menu features multiple alternative and healthy dough bases (including spirulina!), almond ricotta-stuffed crusts, and vegan cheese options such as mozzarella, Parmesan, and Camembert.
4- The Fields Beneath
Similar to PickyWops, London-based cafe The Fields Beneath announced the decision to become completely vegan, stating:
“At The Fields Beneath, we’ve been open a little over four years and started transitioning to a vegan menu in December, cutting out meat first. ‘What’s wrong with dairy?’ comes up a lot but the aim is to cut out dairy completely by the end of April.”
5- The Egerton House Hotel
If you fancy a traditional English Afternoon Tea, five-star hotel The Egerton House Hotel, located in the Knightsbridge area of London, added a fully vegan option to its menu earlier this year. For £40, vegans can now enjoy a fully Vegan Afternoon Tea, which includes:
“Your choice from our finest leaf teas with homemade vegan cakes including iced chocolate brownie, vanilla and coconut sponge, lemon drizzle cake, fruit and custard tartlet and vanilla cupcake. Freshly cut sandwiches including grilled vegetables on granary baguette, guacamole and rocket on white bread, chickpea-coronation on granary bread, cucumber on brown bread and tomato and olive tapenade on sun-dried tomato bread. Freshly home baked vegan plain and fruit scones served with a selection of preserves.”
Created “specifically with vegans in mind,” and made available “all of the time,” the option is a perfect choice for those who “fancy a spot of spontaneous luxury.”
6- GreenBay Supermarket
All great cities have vegan supermarkets, and London is no exception! Located at 228 North End Road, GreenBay Supermarket is:
“London’s First 100% Vegan Supermarket. In addition to all your favourite dairy-free, meat-free and goodies, you’ll find many exclusive products which are not available elsewhere.”
Customers also have the option to shop online, and the supermarket is constantly expanding its “range of exciting new brands so that there is always something new to explore.”
7- by CHLOE. (Coming soon!)
“International expansion was always part of our long-term plan for By Chloe. I’d read that London is one of the greatest food scenes in the world; once I visited, I saw what the hype was about. We’ve built a huge following on social media and have fans in multiple countries consistently asking when we’re coming.”
The menu will include the staple foods by CHLOE. is known for, including burgers, salads, sandwiches, desserts and smoothies, with a “signature U.K. dish” in-the-works. While the exact location is yet to be set, by CHLOE. will open in London’s Covent Garden this fall if all goes according to plan!
